1. Lumentum says its AI optics are sold out until about 2029

The CEO of optical-components maker Lumentum told Bloomberg the company is fully booked into early 2029. For some product lines, it can't fill about 70% of demand through 2027, and some customers are already placing orders for 2030. Six months ago, he expected to sell out only through 2028.

So what for buyersIf you buy networking or server hardware, ask distributors now about allocation and lead times on anything with high-speed optics. Put forecasts in early, and get second-source quotes before a 52-week lead time lands on you.

2. Adani and Jabil plan a 50:50 AI hardware joint venture in India

Adani Enterprises and contract manufacturer Jabil signed a non-binding MoU to build and assemble AI racks, servers, storage, networking, power and liquid-cooling gear in India at multi-gigawatt scale. The deal still needs definitive agreements and approvals, and no timeline has been announced.

So what for supply chain managersTreat this as a possible new source of data-center hardware supply from 2028 onward, not today's capacity. Note it in your long-range sourcing map and check again when there's a definitive agreement.

3. GPU rental prices keep rising even as AI token prices fall

Posts on X highlighted that rental prices for top-end Nvidia GPUs climbed after per-token AI prices peaked, a classic Jevons effect: cheaper AI drives more usage. Silicon Data's B300 rental index launched near $6.95/GPU-hour, up roughly 44% since April. A separate marketplace tracker showed another weekly gain in early October.

So what for procurement leadersCheaper per-token AI doesn't mean a smaller AI bill. Write usage caps, price-review clauses and reserved-versus-on-demand comparisons into AI and cloud contracts before renewals.

4. Broadcom is lining up $30–50B+ to finance OpenAI's custom chips

The WSJ reported that Broadcom is working to arrange more than $50B in financing for the custom AI chips it is co-developing with OpenAI, with Apollo and Blackstone in talks. Bloomberg put the figure nearer $30B and called the talks early. Either way, private credit is now funding chip supply directly.

So what for supply chain managersWhen suppliers finance their biggest customers' purchases, allocation follows the money for years. Map which of your critical inputs share constrained AI chip and server capacity, and build distributor and tier-2 relationships now.

5. Shopify lets AI agents shop and check out, with spending limits

Shopify's Shop skill and Shop MCP let personal AI agents search a catalog of over 1 billion products, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout. Shoppers approve purchases, or can set budgets that let the agent pay without asking. Shopify also reported its ecosystem supported 9.6M+ jobs in the year to June 2026.

So what for procurement leadersAgent buying is arriving in consumer checkout first. Start drafting policy for agent-placed purchases: approval limits, which suppliers are allowed, and audit trails. Ask key suppliers whether their catalogs and pricing are readable by machines.

6. TikTok tests an AI shopping assistant and one-click Buy Direct

TikTok is rolling out a conversational shopping assistant and Buy Direct, an in-feed checkout, to eligible advertisers. Integrations include Salesforce, Shopify and Stripe.

So what for plannersWhen demand moves into AI chat and social feeds, promotion spikes can arrive with little warning. Add these channels as demand signals, and watch for pull-forward and the dip that follows.

7. Practitioner tip: "boring AI" is the procurement win

A procurement practitioner described the most useful AI agent job in a single line: read supplier offers, compare them with your requirements, and flag what's missing. It's a narrow, checkable task, as opposed to an autonomous buyer.

So what for buyersStart with bid comparison and gap-finding on RFQ responses: a narrow task you can check. Keep award decisions human, and use only data your company has approved for AI tools.
